The Forest is a first person survival horror game that was both developed and published by Endnight Games. The Forest was released in May of 2014 for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 4.
The Forest is set on an island that is home to a large forest of many trees. The main character finds himself on the island after being the only one to survive a plane crash onto the island. The Forest doesn’t have any missions or objectives to help guide the player. The only thing the player knows is that they have to survive. It’s up to them how they wish to go about doing that.
The only way the player can survive being on the forested island in The Forest by themselves is by building a shelter, creating weapons, and other necessary tools for surviving in the wild. The player will soon discover that they aren’t the only ones roaming around the island.
The player is surrounded by animals and creatures that also live on this island in The Forest. One of the creatures are mutants that are revealed as nocturnal and cannibals so they are dangerous. They live in the cave systems that are connected to the island.
Mutants in The Forest are almost always violent towards the player. Since they are nocturnal they are seen outside of the caves most during the night. That’s when the player needs to watch out for them. Developers want the player to discover for themselves if the tribe of cannibals are actually a danger to the players character.
When the game begins The Forest has the creatures just seeming to be curious about the player. They’ll be seen a great distance away from the player and their base to observe them and their actions. At first they don’t want to attack and they just want to communicate with them.
Combat with the mutants in The Forest involves groups of them trying to protect their own. They’ll mess with the player by taking out torches but they’re very careful in protecting themselves. They will take cover behind nearby objects and help out the members of their tribe they have been injured.
The mutants will carefully plan out any thing they decide to do and they’re very cautious about entering land they aren’t familiar with. It’s also common for the mutants in The Forest to back out of any type of combat if they feel threatened.
If the player wants the mutants to stay away from them all they have to do is light a fire because they’re scared and will do anything to avoid getting close to a flame. The Forest includes items that allow the player to light both campfires and torches to light up the night and ward off any creatures.
Even though The Forest doesn’t come with any missions set in place there is an optional conclusion if the player wishes to play it. The Forest goes through a continuous cycle of day and night. The player can go out and hunt or build shelters in the day time. In the night time they’re tasked with protecting themselves from the mutants.
